The speed, magnitude, and scope of the changes facing us all today are greater than at any other time in history. If we can learn to adapt to the changes we face today, then we’ll thrive tomorrow. Not to mention we’ll be that much more confident and prepared the next time uncertainty comes knocking. Here are a few ways to cultivate adaptivity.

Stay Present, Stay Calm

Stress, anxiety, fear, and worry are natural first responses when things change. But they don’t have to be our final response. We can acknowledge how we’re feeling, and then re-focus on taking action towards constructive solutions. Mindfulness goes a long way in helping maintain a state of calm presence. The actions we take from this state are almost guaranteed to be more efficient and effective than knee-jerk emotional responses. Sometimes there’s nothing like a few simple deep breaths to help cultivate adaptivity.

Maintain Perspective

Context is king. It’s easy to get so lost in the turmoil of the moment that we lose our broader perspective. Maintaining perspective helps us stay grounded and choose wise responses. Remember that nothing lasts forever and that there’s often a hidden gift in every experience. It’s helpful to ask ourselves what opportunity is being presented by the current challenge and use adaptivity to align ourselves with future success.

Commit to Being a Life-Long Learner

Make a commitment to being a lifelong learner, especially in areas that support your personal goals, and the skills needed to adapt to the challenge at hand. All other changes aside, according to Forbes more data has been created in the past two years than in the entire history of the human race to date. By being a life-long learner we can stay abreast of the trends and skills that will shape our world in the future.

Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Your People

In times of challenge, maintaining your self-care routine is even that much more important. When you’re feeling pressed, don’t give in to the temptation to short change your diet, exercise, and sleep regimen. Once you’ve got a handle on your own wellness, you then have the resources to reach out to those around you. Being of service to the people in our lives reminds us that we’re all in this together and that it’s up to us to make the world a better place for the generations that come tomorrow.
